John Edward McFadyen was born on 31 March 1966 and enlisted at Newcastle on 15 May 1984 with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. His first service abroad was in Berlin from January 1884-March however his first combat deployment was in Northern Ireland from 6 August- 18 December that same year. Further service followed in Canada, Cyprus and Germany as well as a brief period on the Falkland Islands in 1988.

McFadyen was posted to the Gulf on 29 December 1990 for service on Operation Granby, remaining in the country until 11 April 1991. Another tour of Northern Ireland followed between 13 June 1993-20 February 1994, after which he was transferred to the Adjutant General's Corps on 6 June 1997. McFadyen was discharged on 8 August 1998 with his service described as exemplary; sold together with a detached rosette and a copied statement of service.
