(x) Banque de Syrie, Syria, specimen 1 Piastre Syrienne, Beyrouth, 1st January 1920,

The 1 Piastre Syrienne, issued on 1st January 1920, was the lowest denomination of the first series of banknotes under the French Mandate in Syria and Lebanon. Issued by the Banque de Syrie, it marked the transition from Ottoman to French financial control.
The note features the ruins of the Roman Temple of Jupiter in Baalbek, symbolizing the region’s deep historical roots. Introduced to replace the Ottoman lira, the Syrian pound was tied to the French franc, reflecting France’s economic restructuring of the region. As the smallest denomination, the 1 Piastre was essential for daily transactions. Few examples have survived due to economic shifts and inflation, making early issues from this series particularly difficult to find today.
