Provenance

The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part One

Strictly speaking, the name of the king as it appears on the coins should be transliterated as Virendra. Carlo Valdettaro was told by the mint master, Mr. Pradhan, that His Majesty had requested him to spell his name as Virendra by using the same initial consonant as in vīra and vikrama (letter by C. Valdettaro to Nicholas Rhodes and Karl Gabrisch, dated Breganzona, 3írd June 1986). However, even English language newspapers of Nepal always transliterated the king´s name as Birendra.
