Provenance
The Nicholas Rhodes Collection of Nepalese Coins and Medals: Part One
This lot contains light-weight late Licchavi coins which were described in the following article: Rhodes, Nicholas: "A Late Licchavi Hoard from Nepal", ONS Newsletter, No.155 (Winter 1998), p. 22-23. The coins come from a hoard about than 1200 Licchavi coins which were found in 1997 in Panch Khal, a village near Banepa (east of Kathamandu). About 200 coins had clear designs and/or readable legends and were unknown types or variants of RGV 159. Nicholas Rhodes suspects that the remaining 1000 coins were mostly of the fairly common type RGV 97. Most of the 67 coins were acquired by Nicholas Rhodes from the Kathmandu coin dealer Purushatom Lal Shrestha and they were taken out of the best part of the hoard.
