Note: In 1885, the India Office investigated options for adopting the continental system of using stamps for the payment of parcel postage and money orders. Using specimens provided by the Belgian Minister of Railways, Posts and Telegraphs as reference, essays were produced by De La Rue for an overprint on the existing postage stamp issues of India, providing space for the date of payment and the signature of the receiving officer.
