1d. deep carmine-red Trial Printing, an extremely fine mint pair with large to very large margins and large part original gum; lovely fresh colour and crisp impression. One of the finest of the four known pairs, a hugely rare multiple. B.P.A. Certificate (1990). S.G. 22, £50,000+

Note:
In 1930's 'Cape of Good Hope: it's Postal History & Postage Stamps' by Gilbert J. Allis wrote: "what probably occured is that before the actual printing of the December supply...a sheet or two were struck off on the paper most readily available.. for the purpose of testing the condition of the plate, not the paper, and that the copies of the One Penny value now in existence are survivals from the trial sheet or sheets."
