Early Letters
1872 (18 Apr.) entire letter headed ”Eskdale from D. Arnot, the agent and representative of the Griqua chief, Nicholas Waterboer, addressed to Richard Southey, the Colonial Secretary, Cape Town, marked ”On Service” and ”Free”, showing arrival c.d.s. (25.4) with Hopetown datestamp (19.4) on reverse along with a partial impression of Arnot’s red wax seal. The letter complains about the delay in receipt of Southey’s letter, and the original delayed envelope accompanies this, addressed to Arnot at his farm at Eskdale, Griqualand West. Arnot incorporates a copy of a letter received from the Cape Governor Sir Henry Barkly regarding future jurisdiction of the diamond fields and their annexation. An item of great significance in the postal history of Griqualand West; also 1872 letter from Griqua addressed to Mr. Southey describing the diggers on the north bank of the Vaal river.
