Griqualand West
Early Letters
1856 entire to Prins Albert showing handstruck “6” and, on reverse, superb ”office of the secretary/agent and representative of the griqua paramount chief/nicholas waterboer/cape of good hope” red wax seal with black Colesberg (1.10) and Beaufort (4.10) oval datestamps. A huge rarity. Photo

Note: Nicholas Waterboer (1819-1896) succeeded his father, Andries Waterboer, in 1852 and occupied the area in which the first diamonds were found along the Vaal River, and on the site of Kimberley. After the discoveries of 1867, and the resultant influx of diggers, he placed himself under British authority, retaining representation through his agent, David Arnot. In 1878 accused of complicity in a revolt, he was banished to Hopetown, but later worked as a carpenter in Kokstad, and received an annual allowance of £1,000.
