"Rainbow" Trials
State 3: Complete sheet of twelve (4x3) in black on thin white wove, unwatermarked paper; the ink mixed with Prussiate of Potash, therefore showing very strong ivory heads on the reverse, and the plate has been burnished. The upper margin with natural bend, the lower right stamp with slight wrinkle which is also likely natural. A rare trial. Spec. DP20C(a)

Notes: Rowse lists this proof as 19 August, 1840, "almost certainly the last attempt to make a fugitive black stamp". Illustrated in Rowse, page 85.
