Postal History
Fort William 'Thistle'
1769 (22 August.) entire with contents excised from Ballachulish, Lochaber, Highland to Thomas Stewart, Secretary to the Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh, with rate mark "4" on face and, on the reverse, a very clear strike of the famous "fort william/[thistle]" handstamp in black. Some splits along folds and reinforcements in places, nevertheless a remarkable rarity, there being only two other covers recorded bearing this evocative Scottish handstamp, this being among the clearest.
