1890 (12 Oct.) entire letter from Arthur Puzey to his father in East London, written at the Mazoe River just before he set out for Manicaland, bearing British Bechuanaland 1887 4d. lilac and black from the foot of the sheet (S.G. 13) tied to cover by 'palachwe/ khamas town' c.d.s. the letter cover somewhat soiled, endorsed '4d. paid', backstamped 'mafeking' and 'east london''; rare

Note: At this time letters were conveyed from Mashonaland to the Bechuanaland border without charge.

Arthur Puzey was a member of the Pioneer Column which cut the track from Tuli to Fort Salisbury in 1890. He was later joined by his brother Andrew and many of their letters to their parents in East London have survived, including in collections such as H. R. Holmes, Gerald Simpson, Brian Trotter and David Spivack.
