Postal History
Frank Oates
1875 (28 Jan.) envelope to C. G. Oates in Leeds bearing Transvaal 6d. (S.G. 42) in combination with Cape of Good Hope 4d. (pair, one damaged prior to use), the Transvaal cancelled by 'kimberley' double-arc and the 'griqualand west' Goldblatt type G1, and the two Cape stamps by the G1 canceller, a 2d. accountancy mark in red was applied as the Cape postage was underpaid by that amount, also with 'marico zar' double-ring d.s. and the 'cape town/ cape colony' d.s.; with 'klerksdorp', 'kimberley' and 'leeds' markings on the reverse; a very rare and attractive cover

Note: Frank Oates, a naturalist, travelled in Matabeleland and Zambesia from mid 1873 until February 1875. This cover probably contained his letter of 2nd December 1874 to his brother in Leeds which was written at the Matengue River, about 150 miles north-west of Tati, and records that he was setting out on 'a hurried run to the (Victoria) Falls'. This, his fourth attempt, was successful and he reached the Zambesi at the end of December. On his return journey he contracted malaria and died near Tati on 5th February 1875.
