(x) Bechuanaland
Bechuanaland Protectorate
1914-15 Waterlow
1922 (17 Feb.) envelope registered from Lobatsi to Newark, New Jersey bearing Waterlow 2/6d. deep sepia-brown and 5/- carmine, tied to envelope by 'lobatsi' c.d.s (Putzel No.4); two registration markings on the face, one being the oblong 'lobatsi cachet with manuscript '65' and with blue 'passed censor/ c3' circular cachet at foot; on the reverse is a large undated oval sender's cancellation in blue (Post Office Mafeking) with what could be the Postmaster's signature in black. It would appear that Mr. Ziegler wrote to the Mafeking Postmaster requesting the two Seahorse stamps be mailed to him on cover from the Protectorate. The Postmaster then arranged for the cover to be cancelled in nearby Lobatsi from where it went direct to Cape Town and thence, via sea, to New York. A rare and attractive though philatelic usage.
