Tibet
Independence from China
The 'Three Point Agreement'
1912 (12 Aug.) one of the original copies of the Treaty between China and Tibet which features the clauses: "Chinese Military officers and soldiers to return to China via India: Arms and ammunition to be kept under the charge of Nepalese representative at Lhasa: free transport and rations for the Chinese en route for India", it was agreed that this would be completed around December 1912.
The document is written in Tibetan text. At the end it bears the red ink seal of the Dalai Lama (who was still in exile), seven red ink seals of Chinese officers and the black Lhasa Court seal properly signed by Lal Bahadur. It is thought that only three copies of this document were produced, one for Tibet, one for Nepal and one for China (it is possible that a fourth was prepared for the British).
The significance of this highly important document is a statement of Tibet's independence from China. It also signifies the end of Imperial China and the beginning of the Republic. Photo
In 1911 the Manchu Emperor was overthrown in China. This certainly affected the Chinese military in Tibet, most of the officers being Manchu. Political pressure from Britain and Nepal as well as their own civil war led them to make settlements with Tibet. The Nepalese representative, Lal Bahadur was the mediator.
