1939 (Dec.) large scarf letter to the Prime Minister of Nepal, sealed at the end with the large red ink seal (55 x 55mm). The letter reads, "Letter from the Regent at Lhasa to the Prime Minister of Nepal. We are pleased to announce that the Reincarnation of His Highness Dalai Lama has been found in the Eastern Part of Dharjudham - Southern Part of Eastern Khumbhum [Amdo]. He shall be installed on the throne on 1996/11/29 Letter Dt Bhote 10th month 13th day".
Note that in the summer of 1939 the 14th Dalai Lama had been recognised. His party arrived at Rigya, the traditional reception camp for a new Dalai Lama, 3 miles from Lhasa, on 25th October 1939. On 27th October (25th day of 8th month of Earth Hare Year) his party left for Norbu Linka (the Dalai Lama's Summer Palace). The Dalai Lama had to stay in Norbu Linka until an auspicious day had been arranged for him to go the the Potala. The Dalai Lama was in Norbu Linka until 21st February 1940 and was throned on 22nd February. This important letter was written whilst he was in Norbu Linka, waiting for the auspicious date. Photo
