Joint Letter With Amban
1811 (Aug.) cover to the King of Nepal bearing a fine strike of the seal of the seventh Demo Rinpoche, 35x35 mm with six lines of Horyig script and small character at top, used in combination with the Amban handstamp; believed to be the only recorded cover bearing both seals. The contents are summarised, "joint letter from 2 Ambans and Dalai Lama, please don't send headman like Harikrisha (he has no brain). Send a real wise man". The headman was a Nepalese official in Lhasa who looked after Nepalese traders.
A significant and historic item as the Dalai Lama rarely corresponded on political matters. A joint letter is a great rarity. Photo
Note: Mr Thomas Manning, the first visitor to Lhasa had an interview with the Dalai Lama in December 1811. The Dalai Lama was then 7 years old
