Dalai Lama Mail
Fourteenth Dalai Lama
1939 (Dec.) wrapper to the King of Nepal with a special wax seal featuring eight auspicious symbols, some cracking, otherwise complete. It was the tradition that the Regent would write to the Prime Minister of Nepal (see lot 29) whilst the Dalai Lama would write to the King. This was sent by the fourteenth Dalai Lama reincarnate, but still waiting to enter the Potala Palace. For special occasions, they had special seals; it is thought that this is the only example of this seal which clearly shows the eight auspicious signs. Photo
Tenzin Gyatso, born in 1935, was formally recognised in 1939 and enthroned on 22nd February 1940. The Regent, Ganden Phodrang, invested the Dalai Lama with temporal duties in 1950. He escaped the Chinese invasion in 1959 and was exiled in India
