Provenance

The John Noel Simpson Collection of English, Irish and Hiberno-Norse Coins

Following the public outcry over William Wood's coinage of 1722-1724, James Maculla, a Dublin brazier, proposed a plan to issue penny and halfpenny tokens which he undertook to sell at 2/- per pound avoirdupois and to redeem on demand in cash or notes at 1s 8d per pound. Dean Swift would not support the plan as he considered copper tokens should contain their full intrinsic value of metal, but his own counter-proposals were not taken up and James Maculla went ahead with his tokens in 1728.
