Auction: 25021 - The Simpson Collection of Hiberno-Norse and Irish Coinage
Lot: 296
Ireland, [Charles II?] (1660-1685), Token, [1677?], countermark CORKE with leopard's head above and crossed palm fronds below within a beaded circle on a plain brass flan of the tokens of William Ballard 1677, 4.49g (Seaby Coins and Tokens of Ireland 1970, p114; cf. Noonan's, 9 May 2024, lot 509; SCBI 49 [Norweb], 6214; cf. S.6562B), palm fronds largely obscured, fine
Provenance
The John Noel Simpson Collection of English, Irish and Hiberno-Norse Coins
The existence of a similar countermark with the leopard's head replaced by a crown (e.g. Noonan's auction 09 May 2024, lot 509) rules out definitively that the issue could be a Parliamentarian one of 1646, sometimes suggested as an emergency issue of 1689-91 but the date uncertain and 1677 appears most likely to the cataloguer.
