The second Irish coin issue to bear a date. This issue was noted in typical laconic style by the Four Masters: "New coin was introduced into Ireland, i.e. copper; and the men of Ireland were obliged to use it as silver" (Annála Ríoghachta Éireann 1546.7).

Metallurgical analysis indicates a silver content of 24-27%.
