Auction: 25021 - The Simpson Collection of Hiberno-Norse and Irish Coinage
Lot: 91

Ireland, Edward IV, Second Reign (1471-1483), "Cross and Pellets" Coinage, Penny, c. 1478-1479, Third Issue, under Henry Grey, Trim, (m.m.) EDW[...] : HYBE, crowned bust facing, from 'controlled' portrait punches, rev. VI[LL]A : DE [T]RIM, double saltire stops, long cross and trio of pellets in angles, 0.53g, i.m. rose (Burns T-1a [2 Recorded]; National Museum of Ireland-HC.2002.1070; S.6375), die flaw to left of portrait, otherwise struck on a short flan as usual for Period, with a pleasing cabinet tone, probably three known, an excessively rare coin thus that contributes significantly to our understanding of sequencing from the 'Four Controlled' Mints of Dublin, Drogheda, Waterford and Trim

Provenance

The John Noel Simpson Collection of English, Irish and Hiberno-Norse Coins

With ticket

Jasper Burns knew of two specimens of this type; the cataloguer concurs with such a finding, being cognisant of the National Museum of Ireland HC.2002:1070, and the Burns plate coin [from the same reverse die] prior to this example. This portrait is also found on issues of Dublin, Drogheda, and Waterford, and now Trim (Mac Conamhna [BNJ 2017], pp. 105-124).
