Auction: 25018 - The "KMC" Collection of Stamps and Covers of Mexico Part II
Lot: 166

Mexico
1864 "Eagles"
Morelia Duo of very fresh, attractive, and most likely unique 8r. red singles from the 2nd and 3rd Periods (#141 and #220-1864), sent to small sub-offices and postally used. Neither bears the blue remainder cancel. Both with margins all around, though #220 slightly cuts in at top right. The 2nd Period stamp (#141) shows two sub-numbers, implying a rare re-subconsignment or "habilitado" situation, and although the 3rd Period stamp (#220) bears only one visible sub-consignment number, another may be hidden under the cancel. Only 100 8r. stamps were issued per consignment, so they are rare even without the sub-office overprint. The very few sent to sub-offices (5–10 to each of three or four offices) are often unique. The #141-1864 shows subs #6-1864 and #13-1865, due to a re-subconsignment situation involving Pátzcuaro, Taretan, Tacámbaro, and Morelia. The 3rd Period stamp (#220-1864, sub 13) is probably in a similar situation involving Tacámbaro, Ario, Morelia, and Taretan. None of these stamps bears a blue remainder cancel, confirming postal use. Scott 25a, $900.
