Stampless Mail
Mexico District, San Luis Potosí Two Republican stampless registered cover fronts, dated May 10th 1834 (from San Luis Potosí) and August 24th, 1844 (from Mexico City), both displaying the decorative monograms in corners. From the Colonial era until 1882, the rules for certified mail required that, upon receipt, the front of the cover or package be cut out and the recipient sign the reverse as proof of delivery. This signed front was then returned to the office of origin, where it was kept as proof of delivery for two years before being destroyed. This explains their rarity.
