Lot: 2053

British Guiana
1850-51 "Cottonreels"
One of the Only Four "Cotton Reel" Examples in Unused Condition

12c. black on blue, Townsend Type B (Robson Lowe Type C), initialled "E.D.W.", unused, cut round and showing virtually complete frameline, affixed to piece and with some faults including thinning, not detracting the importance of this stamp. One of only three recorded unused examples of the 12 cents made even more significant by the fact that only four unused 'Cotton Reel' stamps are known to exist, with the fourth being the unique unused 8 cents. Due to the extreme scarcity of recorded unused examples and the immense significance of the "Cotton Reels" in philately, these are regarded as among the greatest rarities of the British Empire in unused condition. Rendon (1997) and Brandon (1997) certificates S.G. 5II (mentioned but unpriced as unused in the catalogue). Photo
