Provenance

The Thousand Peaks Collection

Varieties exist according to the lion head and tail inclination. Despite the lack of denomination, the diameter and weight are the same as the contemporary 20c silver coins. Hence, this medal was circulating as 20c in Szechuan and Tibet border. According to Ma Dingxiang in 1945, "this silver medal was commissioned by the Governor of Szechuan Yin Changheng during his expedition in Tibet. Both copper and silver version were produced in which silver was for 1/2 rupee and 0.01 rupee for copper. Showing year 1st of ROC on front, crossed flag at centre and lion on reverse. No denomination was showed. Most of them were circulating at the border of Szechuan. Some believed that it was minted by Xiong Kewu but actually it was not".
