Cromwell, as Lord Protector (1653-1658), Pattern Broad, 1656, by Thomas Simon, Drury House (London), OLIVAR • D • G • R • P • ANG • SCO • ET • HIB &c PRO • laureate and draped bust left, with berries in wreath, rev. 56 • PAX • QVÆRITVR • BELLO • 16, crowned and garnished shield of the Protectorate, edge straight grained, 9.076g, 6h (W&R 39; Schneider II, 367; North 2744; S.3225), some striking weakness to peripheries, and heavier cabinet friction in otherwise attractively lustrous, residually brilliant and handsomely cabinet toned fields, almost extremely fine, a striking example of this extremely sought after one-year issue
