Charles II (1660-1685), Royal African Company, 'Elephant' Shilling, 1666, no stop before DEI, first laureate and draped bust variety right, elephant below, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, edge straight milled, 5.95g, 6h (Woodhouse 321; Lord Hamilton 77; Manville 51; Pywell-Phillips 55; ESC 1026; cf. Bull 507 but with stop after HIB; S.3373), soft to hair and French shield, with a uniform grey tone and pleasing to elephant, about very fine, a celebrated rarity of the Shilling series
