Auction: 25004 - British and World Coins and Medals
Lot: 27
Stephen of Blois (1135-1154), 'Watford' Type, Penny, 1136-1145, Wilton, Falche, + ST[IEFNE : R], crowned and draped bust right, sceptre before, rev. + FALC[H]E : ON : PILT[V]• voided octofoil with inward fleurs, 'annulet' touching second quarter, 1.45g [22.38grns], 10h (Lockett 1119* = FEJ 1098 this coin; Harris, SCMB 1987, p. 307; Mack 39a; North 873; BMC I, 114; S.1278), struck on an unusually broad, square-cut planchet, with peripheral striking softness and crimping, some blundering to legends, the portrait otherwise delightfully strong for type, further accentuated by rich cabinet tone, about very fine, a most pleasing coin with a solid pedigree
