(x) Foreign Exchange Certificate / Banco Nacional de Cuba, Cuba specimen 1 Peso Convertible, 1994, serial number 000000, Cuba's economy features two currencies: the Cuban peso (CUP) and the Cuban convertible peso (CUC), each serving distinct markets. Introduced in 1994 and pegged to the US dollar, the CUC is used in establishments authorised for freely convertible currency transactions.
Both currencies can be exchanged at official bureaux. While denominated in pesos, the CUC has a different foreign exchange rate than the CUP. The 1994 CUC banknotes feature embossed elements for enhanced security.
This dual system emerged as Cuba's response to post-Soviet economic challenges, balancing global economic participation with domestic financial control.
