The obverse portrait is copied from a medal by Leoni. See 'Splendours of the Gonzaga' exhibition catalogue (London, 1981), 'Ippolita was removed as one of the most beautiful and accomplished women of her day…' The medal can be dated to 1552, the year after the death of her first husband, Fabrizio Colonna. She died suddenly in Naples in 1563, aged 28.
