Medieval Period (1350-1500), Copper-Alloy Book Fitting, one-piece book fastening of Howsam's type A.9.2, front engraved with black lettering within rectangular outer border in blackletter script, background of engraved oblique hatching and reads IN DOMIS | INIS ['IN THE HOME'], 49.08g, length: 73.09mm, width: 34.57mm, thickness: 4.59mm (PAS NARC-4B8BA8 [this object]; other similar PAS recorded objects: IOW-7D75B7; BERK-AC4903; HAMP-58A97E), residual traces of gilding, attractive blue and green colouring throughout, complete and ornate, very fine

"The clasp would have been attached to the end of a strap on one cover of the book and the hole in the underside would have fitted over a peg fixed to the other cover. The ring at the end may have taken a cord to make it easier to pull the clasp on and off the peg."
