The Pritchard Collection of 18th Century Provincial Tokens and Commemorative Medals
This piece was the inspiration of Mr Charles Innes, director of the Inverness Royal Academy. He suggested to the Edinburgh firm of goldsmiths, Hamilton and Inches that a medal should be struck to constitute the 'leading prize' in each Scottish school and to commemorate the golden jubilee. Following representations to the Secretary for Scotland, a proposal was submitted to the Queen who sanctioned the medal and signified that it should be styled 'The Queen's Medal'.
Unlike awarded medals this remains unengraved to the edge.
