The Pritchard Collection of 18th Century Provincial Tokens and Commemorative Medals
Since very early times the ancient office of the King's Champion had been held by the Marmion family, the duties of the champion being confined to his appearance at the coronation. The last appearance of the Champion was at the coronation banquet of George IV where Henry Dymoke acted as deputy to his father, the Reverend John Dymoke, and threw down the gauntlet and issued the traditional challenge to anyone to deny the sovereign's right to be king. This banquet having been dispensed by William IV, was not retrieved by Queen Victoria.
