James Boyle became a Temporary Second Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers on 6 February 1915. He entered the war in France from 2 September 1915 and became a Temporary and Acting Lieutenant on 6 January 1916. His London Gazette entry for his Military Cross has him as a Temporary Lieutenant.
