John Nesbit McArthur was born at Glasgow on 3 January 1901 and was a moulder prior to enlisting on 25 July 1918. He first served aboard Powerful before joining Concord on 18 October 1918. He was later loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy for a period of two years from 9 June 1931. Becoming eligible for his L.S. & G.C. on 25 January 1934, it was presented to him on 11 April 1934. McArthur was serving at the start of the Second World War on Drake and was promoted to Temporary Acting Boatswain on 5 November 1940.

Sold together with a Royal Corps of Signals sporting prize medal (Boxing won by Ldg Sea McArthur) engraved, as well as details of him losing a Featherweight contest in February 1925 so this medal must relate to another match.
