(x) Five: Lance-Corporal C. Bell, 1st & 2nd South African Infantry, later Natal Scottish Battalion, who was twice wounded in action during the Great War

Charles Bell enlisted in October 1914 into 'B' Company of the 1st Infantry and was discharged in August 1915. He then joined the 6th Infantry and South African Reserve Company, 1st Infantry Brigade. Arriving to Rouen in February 1918, he was wounded in action on 19 April 1918, re-joined his unit in August 1918 and was wounded for a second time on 17 October 1918. Bell was attached to the Military Police in London in January 1919 and landed back in Cape Town in December 1919, being discharged in January 1920.

Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Bell joined the 3rd Natal Scottish Battalion, 1st Reserve Brigade in August 1940 and served in Northern Rhodesia from February-July 1941. He was discharged unfit in July 1943.
