James Lawrence served in the 1/8th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment and was commissioned Second Lieutenant. The 1/8th Battalion was raised in August 1914 at Aston Cross, part of the Warwickshire Brigade, South Midland Division. They landed at Le Havre on 22 March 1915 before moving to Italy in November 1917. They returned to France on 11 September 1918 and joined 75th Brigade, 25th Division.

Sold together with a miniature M.I.D. oak leaf and instructions for wear, a 1910 cross country Waltho Cup medal engraved on the reverse 'J. Lawrence. A. Coy. Winners', a miniature bible, and a brooched photo of Lawrence.
