Donald Ferguson was born in April 1872 at Port Voller, Ross and enlisted with the Royal Naval Reserve on 23 October 1897. He served on Zaria, Lyons and Island Prince, largely trawlers engaged in minesweeping during that time, as well as appearing on the books of several shore bases. Ferguson was awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 21 May 1918 whilst serving on Island Prince and his service records confirm the award of the 1914-15 Star trio. He was discharged on 14 February 1919.
