Sidney Sharp was born at Liverpool on 8 March 1890 and commissioned Sub-Lieutenant on 13 June 1915. He was posted to the armed merchant cruiser Hilderbrand on 6 July 1915, being advanced Lieutenant with her on 6 September.
This unit was part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron, also known as 'Cruiser Force B', which served the Northern Patrol stationed in the Shetland and Orkney Islands. Their role was largely to maintain the blockade of Germany and was integral in her eventual collapse in 1918. Whilst serving there Hilderbrand was narrowly missed by a torpedo off Rathlin Island, Ireland. H.M.S. Drake, behind her, was sunk by same torpedo. Sharp was demobilised on 9 October 1919.
