Provenance:
Noonan's, March 2021.
Fred Neal was born at Bentley, Hampshire on 12 February 1885 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 1st Class on 28 January 1909. He served on a number of vessels including Renown, Flexible and Fisgard before joining Hardy on 4 September 1913, with whom he served until 13 March 1919.
Hardy was one of 20 'Acasta Class' destroyers. She was in the 4th Destroyer Squadron and in the 8th Group and was commanded by Richard Anthony Aston Plowden at the Battle of Jutland. On 16 December 1914, Hardy saw action in the Dogger Bank area in the early stages of the German raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby. She incurred significant damage and had to limp back to port under escort from H.M.S. Spitfire. Three crew were killed and ten wounded. Neal was shore pensioned on 4 February 1926; sold together with copied service papers.
