Four: Able Seaman T. Parrott, Royal Navy, who served aboard H.M.S. Achates at the Battle of Jutland

1914-15 Star (201010. T. Parrott, A.B., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (201010 T. Parrott. A.B. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (201010. Thomas Parrott, A.B. H.M.S. President III.), mounted for display, contact marks, nearly very fine (4)

Thomas Parrott was born at Aldershot, Hampshire on 16 March 1883. A Cabin Boy, he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class and Bugler on 16 March 1907 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in June 1899. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in March 1901 when at Vivid I and Able Seaman in May 1904 when on Montagu.

During the Battle of Jutland, he served onboard Achates. Achates did not fire any torpedoes in this engagement, as her commanding officer believed that British cruisers were in the vicinity. Achates found herself leading the remains of the Flotilla but, after a third encounter with the German battleships in which Fortune was sunk, she lost contact with the rest of the Flotilla, turning away in the belief that she was being pursued by German cruiser.

Parrott saw further service aboard Victory I, June-August 1916; Glory (North Russia service), August 1916-October 1917; Victory I, October 1917-June 1918 and President III (Defensively Armed Merchant Ships), July 1918-September 1919. Parrott was awarded his L.S. & G.C. in May 1919 and invalided from the service in January 1921 after suffering from eye problems; sold together with copied service papers.
