John Murphy, alias John Patrick Shannon, was born in Dublin, Ireland and enlisted into the King's Royal Rifle Corps at Winchester on 5 February 1889 (records also refer to Leicester). He served at home until being posted to India on 25 November 1890, where he qualified for the India General Service Medal 1854-95 with clasps for Samana 1891 and Hazara 1891. Murphy returned home on 14 January 1899 before returning overseas to serve in South Africa from 4 November 1899. He returned home on the 14 March 1902 and was discharged on the following day. Murphy is additionally entitled to the King's South Africa Medal with 2 clasps. He re-enlisted at Sunderland on 16 June 1919 at the age of 56, considered fit according to his medical record, and subsequently served at home until 31 July 1919. Murphy then served in France from 1 August 1919 before returning home on 1 January 1920. He was finally discharged, for the second time, on 20 January 1920.
