(x) East and West Africa 1887-1900, 2 clasps, 1898, Sierra Leone 1898-99 (464. Pte. J. Wilson. 1/W. I. Rgt.), good very fine

Joseph Wilson was born at Brown's Town, Jamaica around 1871 and enlisted with the West India Regiment on 26 September 1890. Joining the 1st Battalion in March the next year he was posted to West Africa on 28 February 1895, where he took part in the expedition to Tambi on 7 April 1892. Not long after the expedition he was first granted a good conduct badge, for the rest of his career he was to regularly forfeit and be re-awarded this distinction.

While still in Africa the Battalion was also deployed in the expedition against the Sofas of Sierra Leone from 1892-93. Wilson was further present that year for the expedition into Foreign Combo, Gambia and the capture of Gunfwo on 9 March 1894. Returning to the West Indies on 28 February 1895 he was to return to Africa in November 1897, seeing action during the Hut Tax war in Sierra Leone between 1898-1899.

This was to be Wilson's final period of active service as he was posted to Bermuda in November 1899 and from thence back to the West Indies in December 1900. There he served until he was discharged on 11 January 1901 listing his intended place of residence as Jamaica; sold together with copied research.

Note despite the recipient's extensive service in Africa no evidence has been uncovered of entitlement to further clasps.
