New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated '1864 to 1866' (274 John Thornton. 68th Lt Infy.), contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise very fine

John Thornton was born at Manchester and enlisted in the 68th Regiment of Foot on 15 March 1858. He remained a Private throughout, no doubt the result of instances of drunkenness recorded in his papers. Thornton was discharged at Sunderland on 12 March 1879, having served eleven years in the East Indies and just over two years in New Zealand.
