(x) Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Talavera (T. Cook, Corpl. 48th Foot.), slight edge bruise, very fine
Thomas Cook is confirmed on the roll under the name of Thomas Cooke. At Talavera both Battalions of the 48th Regiment of Foot served under General Hill as part of the 2nd Division. Their respective Brigades, those of Tilson and Stewart took the Cerro de Medellin Hill from the French 9th Light Brigade.
Seeing the repulse of the King's German Legion and Guards Brigade at the Portina, the 48th advanced from the Hill to support them alongside the second line. In the resulting clash Colonel Donnellan, the commander of the Regiment was mortally wounded however the line was stabilised and the British won the day. To this day the successor Regiments of the 48th Foot celebrate Talavera Day in celebration of the victory; sold together with a copied medal roll.
