The Providence Tool Company, of Providence Rhode Island, produced some 10,434 sabres of this type under the U.S. government Ordnance Department contract of February 1862. Also known as the M1862, this pattern of sabre was used from the American Civil War through to the end of the Indian wars. Some were still being carried by the time of the Spanish-American War, and it is also seen as the 'classic' cavalry weapon of many of the famous 'Western' movies of the 20th century.
