Wauchope Medal, silver, the reverse engraved 'L Corpl. J. Shirra. For Conspicuous Gallantry in the Battle Beyond Bagdad, March 14. 1917. Presented by Colonel A. G. Wauchope', in Elkington, London, case of issue, extremely fine

Approximately 70 Wauchope Medals were awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Royal Highlanders during the Great War; 60 for gallantry at the Battles of Loos and Mushaidie (the ‘Battle Beyond Baghdad’); and 10 to men who had specifically distinguished themselves scouting in No Man’s Land.

John Shirra was born at Stirling and enlisted at Dunblane, Perthshire Scotland. He had been employed with the baker Messrs Thos Elder & Sons prior to joining the Black Watch. He first served overseas in France on 14 July 1915 and, according to an entry in the Stirling Observer on 15 May 1917, Shirra had taken part in the Battle of Loos and was wounded. Upon his recovery he returned to his Battalion and went out East in 1916. He was killed in action on 21 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
