Joseph John Harrison was born at Wanganui on 31 July 1881 and was a farmer by trade at Putiki when he enrolled in the Wanganui Rifle Volunteers in November 1900. Transferred to the 7th (Wellington West Coast) Regiment in March 1911, he served with the New Zealand Permanent Staff from October 1914 until February 1919, being returned to the 7th Regiment. Harrison was awarded his New Zealand Territorial Service Medal in February 1913 and his Colonial Forces L.S. Medal in October 1921, by which time he had over two decades of service to his name.
Harrison returned to Wanganui and was Drum-Major of the Garrison Band, also being the licensee of the Royal Hotel and the Upokonga Hotel. He died in May 1933; sold together with copied service record.
