H. McCullagh enlisted in 1940 and was posted first to the 1st Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment and then to the to the 1st/7th Battalion. The 1/7 Battalion were initially in Iceland and then landed in Normandy on 12 June 1944 and took part in the severe fighting around Caen and ultimately in the liberation of Arnhem. At some stage and for some reason McCullagh changed his name to 'Jack Shipton and called himself 'Jack' but 'Private H. McCullagh still with the number 4613468 eventually served with the 1st Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment in Korea.
