(x) Six: Engine Room Artificer K. R. Griffin, South African Navy

Kenneth Rigby Griffin was born on 12 June 1921 and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (S.A.) at Port Elizabeth on 1 March 1941. He served aboard Nelson from 18 April 1941 until 18 March 1942, and during this time Nelson was involved in the incident where the supply vessel Gonzenheim scuttled on 4 June 1941, and she then became part of the convoy for Malta firstly in July and then again in September. Griffin then spent time on Victory at Portsmouth from 19 March to 29 April 1942 before joining Hawkins from 30 April to 11 June 1942. After a further spell on Victory between 12 June and 1 October 1942, he transferred to the Engine Room Branch with the rating E.R.A.4.. He is then posted to the Destroyer Amazon on 2 October 1942 until 13 September 1943. Amazon was deployed to escort convoys to Gibraltar for the North Africa landings (Operation Torch). He then joined Afrikander from 14 September 1943 to 29 February 1944, then to Bonaventure for just a month between 1-23 March 1944. Griffin was declared medically unfit by the Medical Board on 21 March 1944 and discharged at Port Elizabeth on 4 June 1944. Griffin's medal entitlement is confirmed in his service papers, which were despatched on 8 November 1951.
